Heels & Souls: Mark Grusane, DJ Okapi & Special Guest TBA
We’re very excited to announce Mark Grusane, DJ Okapi & another TBA special guest play Heels & Souls’ first ever party at The Pickle Factory on the 22nd June. Each of these DJs have been dream bookings for us so to have them all on one line up, with Mark and Okapi flying in for the party specifically from Chicago and Johannesburg, is going to be very special indeed. As always we’ll be bringing down the DJR400 to get the most out of Pickle’s beautiful d&b system and we’ve got some tasty decor ideas in the works too.
All of 2018’s parties are part of a year-round fundraising effort for Key Changes – an inspirational, grassroots charity providing music engagement and recovery services in hospitals and the community for young people and adults experiencing mental health problems. After the success of the last party where we raised close to £1000 for Key Changes we’re hoping for more of the same to edge closer to hitting our £5000 target.
(50% of the RA booking fee will also be donated to Key Changes, alongside the profits from the party.)
Mark Grusane knows a thing or two about records. Digging runs through his veins, demonstrated by a decade spent behind the counter at the much-venerated Mr. Peabody Records, his excellent comps for BBE Records and his powerful and considered DJ sets that’ve won plaudits from the likes of Theo Parrish and Sadar Bahar. Mark’s idiosyncratic style, in development since the early 80’s, sees him weave between different textures and styles with a focus to play quality, obscure, heart pounding, ‘Make You Get Up And Move’ music.
For those that don’t know Johannesburg’s DJ Okapi has, for a number of years, been running the highly respected Afrosynth blog uncovering to the average joe a world of amazing South African 80’s & 90’s bubblegum / disco music. It’s popularity, and Okapi’s vast knowledge, has led him to turn the blog into a physical record store in Joburg, as well as a label focusing on reissues of these hard to find South African gems – many of which were never released worldwide. On top of that he’s also curated many of the key compilations of South African music that have come out recently on the likes of Rush Hour and Soundway.
We’ll be releasing details of our special guest on the 2nd June but trust us he’s both an esteemed producer and a killer DJ…
Heels & Souls:
It’s been a great start to the year for Ben & Pat, as well as becoming the newest members on the Dimensions DJ Directory they’ve locked in festival bookings at Lost Village, Kala and the mighty Fort Punta Cristo. They’ll be warming up the dance on the 22nd so expect some sweet selections from early doors.
