The Shining - J Dilla

Format: CD   2x12" (out)
On August 22nd, 2006 J Dilla’s 'The Shining' will serve as a
testament to the fact that legends never die.

On February 10th, 2006, the world of Hip Hop lost J Dilla aka Jay
Dee.

James ‘J Dilla’ Yancey leaves behind an impression on Hip Hop that
will last the test of time. A bridge between Hip Hop’s underground
and mainstream, Dilla’s contributions ranged from single handedly
defining Detroit Hip Hop as a founding member of Slum Village to
providing his production talents to Common, D’Angelo, Busta Rhymes,
Erykah Badu, A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, The Roots, Janet
Jackson and Macy Gray.

The Shining marked the reunion of J Dilla & BBE, who had released
Welcome 2 Detroit, J Dilla’s debut album. The Shining serves as
showcase of J Dilla’s talents which features him not only as a
producer, but also as a rapper, singer and musician. Featured guests
on this album include Busta Rhymes, Common, Pharoahe Monch, D’Angelo,
Madlib, Black Thought, Medaphor aka MED, and Guilty Simpson.

"Dilla's pristine blend of live instrumentation and sample loops earned him status as the quintessential "producer's producer. " - XXL, 2006

"Mr. Yancey was celebrated for the beats he made, which tended to be warm and slightly off-kilter... He never quite stormed the pop charts, which seemed to suit him fine. He loved abstract, smudgy base lines, woozy samples, tricky rhythms that deemphasized backbeats. " - New York Times, 2006

"Yancey's unique style, blending claps, drum machines and samples helped change the sound of modern hip hop." - Associated Press, 2006

"one of the most important musicians of our time. When we think of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye, J Dilla will be going down along that history line of greatness." - Common (from XXL), 2006

"He inspired me so much. One of the best days of my life was when he handed me a record with drums on it. I was so honored " - Kanye West (from XXL), 2006

"Time will soon tell if Dilla will be bestowed the legendary status given to the historic figures who lived in obscurity only to see their legend established once gone from this earth. I, for one, will always spread the word about his talent." - ?uestlove (from Scratch Magazine), 2006
